How can Cognitive Behavioural Therapy help?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is indicated by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE, www.nice.org.uk) to be used with a number of mental health problems, including Depression, Anxiety, Panic, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Phobias. It is a goal directed therapy, where the therapist uses a range of techniques to help the client learn new behaviour and a new way of thinking. Essentially the therapist teaches the client to become their own therapist examining alternative ways of thinking and dealing with their issues.

Therapists use a cognitive model, first described by Aaron Beck in 1976, where Thoughts, Behaviours, Feelings (emotional and physical) have a direct effect on each other. So if we change one of these facets eg. replace a negative thought for a positive one, then it will have a direct effect on our mood, our behaviour and how we feel physically. CBT interventions are used to break into vicious cycles of maladaptive behaviour and thoughts. It looks at levels of thoughts, looking at how early experience may have stamped in negative core beliefs, question them and aid in construction of new more helpful beliefs.

The number of sessions really depends upon the severity of the client's problems, but generally anything between 6 to 20 sessions. Therapy is collaborative in its nature; the therapist and client making sense of the client's current issues through a formulation and then deciding upon tasks to achieve their goals . The client must take responsibility for change and is expected to do out of session work to move the therapy forward.
